Your Vision, Part Three

 

 

How is your vision of a healthy, vibrant you coming along?  So far, we have covered the dimensions of movement, exercise, and rest, personal and professional development, your physical environment, your relationships and communication, and your mind-body connection.

As promised, I have more questions to help you expand your thoughts on nutrition and spirituality, the remaining two dimensions of your picture of health.

Nutrition

How has paying attention to what you eat and drink help to nourish and strengthen your body and mind?

What are your healthy eating habits?

How are you regulating such things as caffeine, alcohol, nicotine and sugar?

How are your meals appealing to all your senses?

Spirituality

How aware are you of your sense of purpose and what gives your life meaning?

What methods are you using to enhance your connection to your purpose and meaning of your life?

How are you strengthening  with your values and beliefs?

How are your beliefs helping you manage adversity?

 

Remember, this is about your ideal health. The deeper you can look into each dimension, the clearer and more complete will be your picture. Remember to let your heart guide you.

Your Vision, Part Two

 

 

What progress have you made in creating your vision of your ideal state of health?

In my last post, I gave you questions to more fully develop your picture of your overall health and two specific dimensions, your physical environment and your relationships.  

Here are some questions to expand your vision of three other dimensions of your health.

 

Movement, exercise, and rest

What would be your ideal amount of sleep?

What is the overall quality of sleep? (falling asleep, staying asleep, and waking up)

How are you relaxing?

How active would you like to be?

How strong would you like to be?

What type of movement do you most enjoy doing?

How often are you doing your favorite physical activities?

 

Mind-Body connection

How connected do you feel to your body?

How aware are you to your body’s response to stress or strong emotions?

What practices are you using to maintain and enhance the connection between your body and mind?

How does being in connection with your body help you in your daily life?

How do you recognize your need for rest?

 

Personal and professional development

What goals are you pursuing?

If money and time were no object, what would you love to do that would bring you a profound sense of satisfaction, joy, and purpose?

How balanced are your work and personal interests?

What dream might you like to resurrect and pursue?

 

Remember, this is about your ideal health. Allow yourself to perceive how you want to feel with all of your senses.  Remember to let your heart guide you.

Your Vision, Part One

What is your vision of a healthy, vibrant you? How would you look and feel if you were in your best state of well-being? What would your ideal environment, both physical and social, be?

The most important words in those questions are your and you. Discovering your vision for your best state of health is very personal.  Yes, you may have recommendations from doctors or other professionals regarding changes you need to make.  You may also have expectations for yourself based on outside influences, such as loved ones or the media.  Your vision, however, is based on what you allow yourself to see as the ideal way you want to live.  

It is not unusual when I ask people about their vision, they can be very limited at first.  Often with some gentle prompting, they are able to expand and allow themselves to see more possibilities.  By giving themselves permission to widen their vision, most people are amazed by what is in their hearts. If you would like to work on expanding your vision for your ideal health, here are some questions to get you started.

The Big Picture

How would you feel in your best health?  

How would your body feel?

How would you describe your overall energy level?

Your Physical Environment

What would your surroundings be?

What kind of home and community would you be living in?

How would it feel be in your own home?

Your Relationships

How connected do you feel to other people?

What types of support are you receiving from others?

How would you describe your relationship with the people who matter most to you?

What relationships fuel you?

Start by answering these questions. In my next post, I will guide you with questions about the other dimensions of your life.  I have intentionally started with areas other than nutrition and exercise, which are often the only two parts of our health that receive our attention. You can express your vision in different ways, like writing a list, drawing a picture, collecting images that represent your vision.  Whatever way you feel is the most effective way for you to fully grasp the big picture of your ideal life. Remember to give yourself permission to listen to your heart in imagining your ideal state in all areas of your life.  This vision is for you.

The Second Secret

Wouldn’t you like to enjoy your life while you were trying to make positive changes? Wouldn’t you like to escape the cycle of deprivation and over-indulgence that we often experience when trying to improve ourselves?

In my past post, I talked about two secrets to make lasting improvements in life:

  1. Begin with a deep appreciation for the wonder that is you.
  2. Enjoy the journey.

In that post, I suggested that we start with appreciation and gratitude for the amazing gift that is our body. Spend some time each day consciously being grateful for this magnificent gift. That’s the first step to lasting results.

The second secret is to develop the mindset that it’s not about the results, it’s about the journey. If we start with an appreciation for the work that our cells do each day and an awareness that we are guaranteed only this minute of life, it makes sense that making ourselves miserable today to gain a more improved future self is short-sighted.

Yes, we need discipline. Yes, we need to practice delaying gratification. We also need to be able to find joy in each and every day. Total sacrifice of the delight in daily living may get you quick results, but not lasting ones. And lasting ones are the truly healthy ones.  Putting your body on a never-ending roller coaster of cycles of extreme discipline and self-indulgence is only going to produce enough stress to override the benefits of whatever change you are trying to make.

So when you are reaching for your goals, remember that how you do it is more important than achieving the goal.

Lasting Results? Two Secrets

Have you ever considered the wonder that is your body? Or thought about how your body loves you so much it works for you constantly? Or how our senses allow us to appreciate fully the wonder of the world around us?

Self-improvement is a worthy pursuit. Most times we begin by noting only on our shortcomings and focusing on the wonderful future person we are striving to be. Unfortunately, often we make progress only to slide back to where we started.  Then we repeat the process. And repeat it again and again.

I am going to share with you two secrets to making lasting improvements in your life.

  1. Begin with a deep appreciation for the wonder that is you.
  2. Enjoy the journey.

Our bodies are performing constant miracles for us every second.  Not only do we take the act of staying alive for granted, but we also tend to forget the marvels in our bodies that allow us to appreciate this life.

Let’s look at our heart. The heart is a muscle that works 24/7. On average, it beats about 100,000 times per day, which equals about 2.5 billion beats during the average lifetime. It provides blood to almost all of the body’s 75 trillion cells. In one day, blood travels about 12,000 miles, which is about four times the distance across the US from coast to coast. Most importantly, it does this tremendous work without any conscious effort from us. Our heart, and the rest of our body, are dedicated to keeping us alive 24/7.

Next let’s look at our hearing, one of the senses that allow us to appreciate and enjoy life. Your ears take sound waves and translate them into electrical impulses for your brain to comprehend, through a system of bone, fluid and hair cells. There’s no digital technology, and you don’t have to worry about whether they’re turned on or not. But what joys do our ears provide? Music, the sound of a loved one’s voice, and the sounds of nature, to name a few things. Plus the safety feature of keeping us aware of any possible threat. Once again, for the most part the act of hearing requires no conscious effort.

Every cell in your body is working tremendously hard every day to not only keep you alive but allow you to enjoy life and all its wonders. These cells are not doing it for a reward or even a pat on the back, but just out of love for you.  Your body loves you and wants you to appreciate its gift of life. Wow!

So often we focus on what is wrong with our bodies and what we need to change. What we need to do first is start with appreciation and gratitude for the amazing gift that is our body.

Spend some time each day consciously being grateful for this magnificent gift. That’s the first step to lasting results.
